二、阅读理解(根据短文和提问,选择最佳答案)(每题2分, 共40分)
Passage 1
There are different ideas about pets in different parts of the world. In most cultures, animals are in a worse position than human beings. In some cases, however, people treat their pets like members of their families, or perhaps better. In the United States and Europe, there are special shops that sell clothing and food for cats and dogs.
In many countries of the world, there is special food for pets. It is common for big markets in many places to sell cat food and dog food. However, in a small town in France, there is a special restaurant for dogs. Dogs are the only customers. There is seating for twenty of them. The dogs choose from a variety of dishes on the menu.
Of course, in most parts of the world, pets don't live in such wealth and comfort. People treat their pets in a more practical way. People own cats and dogs because they keep away mice and other unwanted animals. Owners have some loving feelings for their pets, but they do not see them as equal to family members. Passage 2
In the United States a university professor is given a few months of freedom from his duties about every seventh year for travel or advanced study. This period of freedom from teaching is called a "study or research leave". Its purpose is to give the professor experiences which will make him a wiser person and a better teacher when he returns to his university.
Few study leaves are interesting enough to be described in national newspapers and magazines. Recently, however, there was an exception. The public learned how Dr. John R. Coleman, president of Haverford College, had spent his study leave.
At the age of 51, Dr. Coleman was determined to escape from university life for a few months and to get a variety of experiences in the world of work. He especially wanted to learn about people. People who do hard physical labor were especially interesting to him.
"I wanted to get away from the world of words and political matters and parties — the things a president does," Dr. Coleman later explained to news writers. “As a college president you begin to take yourself very seriously and to think you have power you don't. You forget things about people. I wanted to relearn things I'd forgotten.”
Telling no one of his plans, Dr. Coleman started his study leave on a farm in Canada, hundreds of miles from his college. Getting up at 4:30 each morning, working thirteen hours a day in fields, he prepared himself physically for his next job, digging ditches in Atlanta, Georgia. After that, the college president washed dishes in a Boston restaurant. During the last ten days of his leave, he worked as a garbage collector.

Passage3
A scientist who does research in economics psychology and who wants to predict the way in which consumers will spend their money must study consumer behavior. He must obtain data both on the motives that tent to encourage or discourage money spending.
If an economist ware asked which of the three groups borrow most-----people with rising incomes, stable incomes or declining incomes -----he would probably answer: those with declining incomes. Actually, in the years 1947----1950, the answer was: people with rising incomes. People with declining incomes were next and people with stable incomes borrowed the least. This shows us that traditional assumptions about earning and spending are not always reliable. Another traditional assumption is that if people who have money expect prices to go up, they will hasten to buy. If they expect prices to go down, they will postpone buying. But research surveys have shown that this is not always true. The expectations of price increases may not stimulate buying.
The investigations mentioned above were carried out in America. Investigations conducted at the same time in Great Britain, however, yielded results that were more in agreement with traditional assumptions about saving and spending patterns. The condition most favorable to spending appears to be price stability. If prices have been stable and people consider that they are reasonable, they are likely to buy. Thus, it appears that the common business policy of maintaining stable prices is based on a correct understanding of consumer psychology.
51. According to the passage, if one wants to predict the way consumers will spend their money, he should
A, rely on traditional assumptions about earning and spending
B. try to encourage or discourage consumers to spend money
C. carry out investigations on consumer behavior
D. do researches in consumer psychology in a laboratory
52. According to Paragraph 2, one traditional assumption is that people with- incomes borrow the most.
A. average      B. stable    C. rising        D. declining
53. The results of the investigations on consumer psychology carried out in America were those of the investigations made at the same time in Great Britain.
A. somewhat different from  B. much better than    C. exactly the same as   D. not as good as
54. From the results of the surveys, the writer of this article
A. concludes that the saving and spending patterns in Great Britain are better than those in America
B. concludes that consumers always expect prices to remain stable
C. concludes that maintaining stable prices is correct business policy
D. does not draw any conclusion
55. Which of the following statements is always TRUE according to the surveys mentioned in the passage 7.
A. Consumers will put off buying things if they expect prices to decrease.
B. Consumers will spend their money quickly if they expect prices to increase.
C. The price condition has an influence on consumer behavior.
D. Traditional assumptions about earning and spending are reliable.

These people did not change their day time behavior. And when they were allowed to sleep without interruptions, the number of their dreams did not increase.

Certain people ever begin to show signs of mental(心理)illness. Some researchers believe that people become this way because they can’t have their usual number of dreams. According to this theory dreaming helps people to lead normal lives.

Other authorities, however, think the auto is here to stay. They hold that the car will remain a leading means of urban travel in the foreseeable future.
The motorcar will undoubtedly change significantly over the next 30 years. It should become smaller, safer, and more economical, and should not be powered by the gasoline engine. The car of the future should be far more pollution-free than present types.
Regardless of its power source, the auto in the future will still be the main problem in urban traffic congestion(拥挤). One proposed solution to this problem is the automated highway system.
When the auto enters the highway system, retractable(可伸缩的)arm will drop from the auto and make contact with a rail, which is similar to those powering subway trains electrically. Once attached to the rail, the car will become electrically powered from the system, and control of the vehicle will pass to a central computer. The computer will then monitor all of the car's movements.
The driver will use a telephone to dial instructions about his destination into the system. The computer will calculate the best route, and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the highway. The driver will then be free to relax and wait for the buzzer(蜂鸣器)that will warn him of his coming exit. It is estimated that an automated highway will be able to handle 10,000 vehicles per hour, compared with the 15,000 to 2,000 vehicles that can be carried by a present-day highway.    (285 words)
41. One significant improvement in the future car will probably be ________
A. its power source         B. its driving system  C. its monitoring system         D. its seating capacity
42.         What is the author's main concern?
A. How to render automobiles pollution-free.   B. How to make smaller and safer automobiles.
C. How to solve the problem of traffic jams.    D. How to develop an automated subway system.
43.         What provides autos with electric power in an automated highway system?
A. A rail.          B. An engine.  C. A retractable arm.         D. A computer controller.
44.         In an automated highway system, all the driver needs to do is ________.
A. keep in the right lane                       B. wait to arrive at his destination
C. keep in constant touch with the computer center  D. inform the system of his destination by phone
45.         What is the author's attitude toward the future of autos?
A. Enthusiastic.  B. Pessimistic.        C. Optimistic.         D. Cautious.
Passage 2
The advantage and disadvantage of a large population have long been a subject of discussion among economists. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worked intensively. Thus, each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population. Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads, and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them.
One of the difficulties on carrying out a worldwide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food raw materials. In the developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources, it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate, whatever the consequences may be. In a highly industrialized society, the problem may be more complex. A decreasing birthrate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened. Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline. (262 words)
46.         A small population may mean _______.
A. higher productivity, but a lower average income  B. lower productivity, but a higher average income
C. lower productivity and a lower average income      D. higher productivity and a higher average income
47.         A large population will provide a chance for developing ______.
A. agriculture        B. transport system         C. industry        D. national economy
48.         In a developed country, people will perhaps go out of work if ______.
A. the birthrate goes up  B. the birthrate goes down  C. the birthrate remains stable
D. there is a great demand for manufactured goods
49.         According to the passage, slowly rising birthrate perhaps is good for ______.
A. a developing nation                    B. a developed nation
C. every nation with a big population        D. every nation with a small population
50.         It is no easy job to carry out a general plan for birth control throughout the world because ______.
A. there are too many underdeveloped countries in the world
B. underdeveloped countries have low level of industrial development
C. different governments have different views of the question
D. even the developed country may have more complex problems
Passage 3
To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor: you must be able to hold the attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clear speaker, with a good, strong, pleasing voice which is fully under your control; and you must be able to act what you are teaching ,in order to make its meaning clear.
Watch a good teacher and you will see that he does not sit motionless before his class: he stands the whole time while teaching; he walks about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his explanations, and his face to express feelings. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality and musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about.
The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn’t mean that he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher’s work and the actor’s. The actor has to speak words, which he has learnt by heart; he has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on the stage.
A good teacher works in a quite different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they ask and answer questions, they obey orders and they don’t understand something, they say so. The teacher therefore has to suit his act to he needs of his audience, which is his class. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he goes along.
51.what is the passage mainly about?
A) How to become an ordinary teacher.        B) What a good teacher should do outside the classroom.
C) What teachers and actors could learn from each other.
D) The similarities and differences between a teacher’s work and an actor’s.
52. A good teacher          .
A) knows how to hold the interest of his students B) has a low voice
C) knows how to act on the stage             D) stands or sits motionless while teaching
53.In what way is a teacher’s work different from an actor’s?
A) THE teacher must learn everything by heart. B) He knows how to control his voice better than an actor.
C) He has to deal with unexpected situations.  D) He has to use more facial expressions.
54. The main difference between students in class and a theatre audience is that
A) there is no stage to watch               B) students must keep silent while theatre audience needn’t
C) no memory work is needed for the students D) the students must take part in the play
55.Why can’t some good teachers play well on the stage?
A) Nobody has taught them how to act on the stage.    B) Their audiences are different.
C) It’s impossible for them to do so much memory work.
D) They are not used to repeating exactly the same words.
Passage4
Let us begin by saying what dose not cause dream. Our dreams do not come from “another world”. They are not messages from some outside source. They are not a look into the future, either.
All our dreams have something to do with our emotions, fear, longings, wishes, needs and memories. But something on the “outside” may affect what we dream. If a person is hungry, or tired, or cold, his dreams may include a feeling of this kind. If the covers on your body, such as a quilt or a blanket, have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping or resting on the ice and snow. The material for the dream you will have tonight is likely to come from the experiences you have today.
So the subject of your dream usually comes from something that has effect on you while you are sleeping (feeling of cold, a noise, a discomfort, etc.) and it may also use your past experiences and wishes and interests you have now. This is why very young children are likely to dream of fairies, older children of school examinations, hungry people of food, homesick soldiers of their families, and the prisoners of freedom.
To show you how what is happening while you are asleep and your wishes or needs can all be joined together is a dream; here is the story of an experiment. A man was asleep and the back of his hand was rubbed with a piece of absorbent cotton(脱脂棉).He would dream that he was in a hospital and his charming girlfriend was visiting him, sitting on the bed and feeling gently his hand.
There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what we dream and what those dreams mean. Their explanation of dreams, though a bit reasonable, is not accepted by everyone, but it offers an interesting approach to the problem. They believe that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes

Passage 1
Daily social relations in France have always been dominated by family ties. The family has been the focus of the individual’s loyalty and affection, of his economic interest, and even of his legal duty. Many an older Frenchman has spent his youth in a world where he was expected to regard cousins, uncles and grandparents as more important to him than friends of his own age, and where the family’s needs and de¬mands were put before those of the local community or even of the State.
The main change since the war is that the focus of loyalty has been steadily nar¬rowing from the “extended fam¬ily” to the “nuclear fami¬ly”, i.e. the home cell of parents and children. In the rural areas the traditionally big peasant families have been losing their influence as the young drift away to the town. As property gives way to income and family man¬agement disappears, the tight network of the big family gath¬ering has become less necessary for the individual’s future, and also less easy to maintain. Many younger couples today prefer pleasure traveling, or a weekend cottage shared with a few friends, to the traditional big family reunions on Sundays and in August.
But old values are still there. Clan (氏族) loyalties towards more distant relatives may become weak, an adult’s ties with his own parents and even with their parents often remain remarkably strong. And if many younger people are today trying to lead more emotionally inde¬pendent lives, it is often not without a sense of guilt, or an awareness of the pain it causes to their parents. This may be so in any country: it is especially sharp in France.
41. In France, people used to _________.
A. value more their families than the country    B. attach most importance to their friends
C. regard their cousins and uncles more important than their parents
D. consider the local community prior to the state

A. many young men and women were killed in the war B. more and more people choose to stay single
C. more and more families have only one child
D. many young men and women are leaving the country for cities
44. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. The French have given up their clan loyalties to independence.
B. Family gathering has become less necessary nowadays.
C. Many younger couples spend weekends and holidays themselves or with a few friends.
D. The old values still have their influence today.
45. What does “this” in the last sentence of the passage refer to ?
A. Loyalty to the family.  B. Emotionally independence.  C. Sense of guilt.
D. Difference between old values and new values.

The computer will then monitor all of the car's movements.
The driver will use a telephone to dial instructions about his destination into the system. The computer will calculate the best route, and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the highway. The driver will then be free to relax and wait for the buzzer (蜂鸣器) that will warn him of his coming exit. It is estimated that an automated highway will be able to handle 10,000 vehicles per hour, compared with the 1,500 to 2,000 vehicles that can be carried by a present-day highway.

Passage3
Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being correct all the time, if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learning to do all the other things they learn to do without being taught—to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle—compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes.
But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them for himself. We do it for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or corrected unless he was made to. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.
If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such daily work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let the children learn what all educated persons must someday learn how to measure their understanding how to know what they know or do not know.
51. According to the passage, the best way for children to learn things is by ______ .

53. If you want to be a good teacher in school according to the writer, you should ______ .
A. let children mark their own work and learn from practice
B. point out children’s mistakes and correct them as soon as possible
C. give child more book knowledge
D. explain mathematics in detail so as to give them correct answers
54.  The best title of the passage should be ______ .

55. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Children can learn to judge their own work.
B. A child learning to talk should be corrected all the time.
C. Children can make necessary changes to make his language piece by piece.
D. A teacher’s job should be to help the child with good methods.
Passage4
Vegetable gardening is the relaxing art and science of turning a love for growing plants into a worthwhile activity.
Vegetable gardeners agree that many home-grown vegetables picked at their best are superior to those vegetables purchased from markets. From spring through late fall, a well-planned and well-kept garden can provide a supply of fresh vegetables, thus increasing the nutrition of the family dirt. Freezers make it possible to keep some of the vegetables to be enjoyed at a later date. Other vegetables can be stored for a few months in a cool area.
Having vegetables in the backyard makes home gardening appealing for many people. In addition, vegetable gardening provides exercise and fun for both urban and suburban families.
Although the money spent for a garden may be little, one cannot escape the fact that gardening requires hard work and time. Many of the gardening tasks must be performed at times that are most inconvenient. Not doing jobs that should be done on a regular bases may result in failure and a negative feeling toward gardening.
One should not plant a garden that is too large for him to care for. A small, well-kept garden is more enjoyable and profitable than a large neglected one. Vegetables do well in full sunlight and need at least five or six hours of sun during the middle of the day. Too much shading results in poor plant and few vegetables. If possible, the garden should be near the house so the gardener can work in it at odd moments.
Soils for vegetables should be easily broken up and porous(能渗透的) for quick water drainage and good aeration(透气). A deep, fine, dandy loam is best.
Usually the home owner has little choice in the soil type he can choose. Fortunately, many vegetables can be grown on poor soils if the soils are properly prepared.
56. Home-grown vegetables ______.
A. can remain standing for a long time and need not be picked immediately
B. have to be eaten as soon as they are picked
C. sell well in the market because of their good quality
D. picked at the right moment are more nutritious than those bought from the market
57. Vegetable gardening is appealing for many people because ______.
A. it requires little money              B. it is enjoyable and profitable
C. they can work in the vegetable garden at odd moments
D. it provides vegetables for the family all the year round
58. The author suggests that an ideal vegetable garden ______.
A. should be sunnyB. should be within walking distanceC. should be large-sizedD. should consist of full soil
59. From the passage we can conclude that ______.
A. vegetables take little care while growing  B. vegetables can be grown in almost any kind of soil
C. vegetable gardening is an indispensable part of life for urban and suburban people
D. vegetable gardening is a good pastime for retired people
60. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
A. Vegetable Gardening, an Escape from Boredom.   B. An Ideal Vegetable Garden.

五、 英译汉( 将下列短文中划线部分的句子译成汉语) (每句2分,共10分)
The Northeast’s many rivers, including the Connecticut and the Hudson, have been vital to his history and have helped the Northeast become a center of commerce. The same steep hills that hindered farming aided industrialists in the nineteenth century. The abundant precipitation(降水), about 40 to 60 inches (102 to 152cm) annually, combined with the hilly terrain, kept the rivers of the region flowing swiftly. (86)Industrialists harnessed the power of these rivers by building water wheels, which converted the waterpower into machine power.
Throughout the 1800s—especially in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire—factories powered by water sprang up at waterfalls along the region’s many rivers. The factories manufactured shoes, cotton cloth, and other goods that were sold across the United States and shipped to markets around the world. (87) The region’s river valleys served as trade routes, railroad routes, and modern highway routes for the Northeast. The rivers also provided abundant water for the region.
(88) Young people from the Northeastern countryside flocked to the factory towns to take industrial jobs. By the mid-1800s, European immigrants were streaming across the Atlantic to the Northeast. In 1840, about 84,000 Europeans immigrated to the United States; by 1850, the number sky-rocked to 370,000. Many of these immigrants hoped to earn a good living in one of the Northeast’s many factories, and to improve the quality of their lives.
(89) In addition to population a landscape that favored industry and trade, the people who settled in the Northeast pioneered many new inventions that affect the way we live today. Notable Northeasterners include Eli Whitney, whose concept of interchangeable parts in the late 1700s paved the way for mass production. Thomas Edison, who invented the phonograph in 1877 and a light bulb for long use in 1879, did most of his work in the Northeast. (90) By the early 1900s, the Northeast held a position as the most productive manufacturing area in the world.

二、阅读理解(根据短文和提问,选择最佳答案)(每题2分, 共40分)
Passage 1.
Do you have bright ideas? Ideas for inventions that change society or, at least, make life easier for somebody? Perhaps we all do sometimes, but we don’t often make the idea a reality. Recently, in Britain, there was a competition called British Designers for Tomorrow. The competition encouraged young people to carry out their bright ideas. There were two groups in the contest: Group One was for schoolchildren under 16; Group Two was for schoolchildren over 16. And there were eleven prize-winners altogether.
Neil Hunt, one of the prize-winners, was called ‘Sunshine Superman’ by one newspaper writing about his design. It’s important when people study the weather to be able to record sunshine accurately. We need to know how many hours of sunshine we have and how strong it is. Most sunshine recorders only record direct sunlight. Neil’s is more accurate and this is very important for research into way of using solar power. With his prize of £100, Neil plans to carry on inventing.
You can do so much with animation(动画片). Look at Simon West’s idea for animated road signs. He uses pictures which appear to move as you go nearer to or farther from them. This isn’t a new idea. But it is new to use these pictures on road signs. “We found that people were more likely to see moving signs,” said Simon. So now, you can really see rocks falling, trains moving, horses galloping or a car falling over

The custom of tattooing (纹身) has a long history in Thailand, a southeast Asian country.
In the northeast parts of the country, every boy should be tattooed when he is 17 or 18 years old. This is the indication of his coming into age. People believe that tattooing is a mysterious amulet(护身符)which has some strange internal power. If a person is tattooed, he is free of any misfortune or disaster or unlucky accident. On the other hand, he will obtain love, wealth and will be fortunate in the future.
There is a uniquely traditional ceremony of one’s tattooing. It is usually held in a temple because Buddhism is the national religion in Thailand. It is also a test of one’s courage and will power.
Pictures of birds, fierce animals, flowers, and some strange signs are the favorite contents of the tattoo. They are generally the reflection of people’s desire or dream. Passage 3
American cities are similar to other cities around the world. In every country, cities reflect the values of the culture. Cities contain the very best aspects of a society: opportunities for education, employment, and entertainment. They also contain the very worst parts of a society: violent crime, racial conflict, and poverty. American cities are changing, just as American society is changing.
After World War II, city residents became wealthier, more prosperous. They had more children. They needed more space. They moved out of their apartments in the city to buy their own homes. They bought houses in the suburbs, areas near a city where people live. These are areas without many offices or factories. During the 1950s the American ‘dream’ was to have a house in the suburbs.
Now things are changing. The children of the people who left the cities in 1950s are now adults. They, unlike their parents, want to live in the cities. Many young professionals, doctors, lawyers, and executives, are moving back into the city. Many are single; others are married, but often without children. They prefer the city to the suburbs because their jobs are there; they are afraid of the fuel shortage; or they just enjoy the excitement and opportunities which the city offers. A new class is moving into the city---a wealthier, more mobile class.
Only a few years ago, people thought that the older American cities were dying. Some city residents now see a bright, new future. Others see only problems and conflicts. One thing is sure: Many dying cities are alive again.

Passage 4
In this century the traditional American family is constantly faced with the threat of breakdown. Some sociologists suggest that one little-noticed cause may be the instruction of the TV dinner.
Before the appearance of television sets, the American dinner was a big event for the family for in many homes dinner-time may be the only time when everyone got together. A typical dinner was usually in three stages. In the preparation stage, the children and Father frequently helped with table setting while Mother put the last touches on the roast. In the eating stage, family members shared the day’s experiences and more than food was consumed. In this stage families got to know one another and made joint decisions around the dinner table, and thus the family solidarity was reinforced. In the cleaning-up stage, children or father again gave their hands, so that their significance to the home community was clear. Unfortunately, all of these have been erased by a product—the television set.
By the beginning of the 1980’s, the typical American family dinner is just twenty minutes long. The speed-up of this once-leisurely experiences is clearly connected to the overall pace of modern life and maybe a model of the modern life is the TV dinners — meals designed to be consumed between the opening and closing credits of a half-hour program. The once family affair has now become nothing more than the use of a fork and knife.
